When your team gives up. 6-1….6-1!By: Shad Osman | September 17th, 2013
Yes Drogba we all had the same pain filled facial expression as the game ended. Incase you were under a rock, and just stepped into the sunlight you’re reading that scoreline correctly. Real Madrid sent 6 into the back of the Galatasaray net…6! The worst part about the score line is that Galatasaray was actually in control for the entire first 30 minutes of the game. Yet the goal drought would continue and carry over into the CL. Melo started off by beaming one to Iker Casillas only 3 minutes into the game. Hell it even looked bright as Iker Casillas would sustain an injury after colliding with Sergio Ramos, forcing a sub at the 14′ min.
Burak, Drogba and Sneijder would all follow and take their chances on target but to no avail. It wasn’t until the 33′ minute that Isco, found Reals first real position on goal and made it count as he put Los Blancos in the lead 1-0. I knew that kid was going to be a problem.
To make things worse, Didier Drogba would collide with Pepe and land on the same shoulder he injured in the Antalyaspor game. He tried to tough it out without wasting a sub as there was only 3 mins remaining till the half. Unfortunately upon further examination he was deemed unfit to continue and was subbed out in the second half for Nordin Amrabat. Galatasaray would start the second half with the same passion as the first, but a 2nd goal from Karim Benzema would ultimately kill the teams morale 2-0.
I dont understand how a team who was down 4-0 on aggregate, that fought so hard to try and score 5 just last season could just give up like they did after only 2 goals. The defense wasn’t there. From here on out every possession Real had was a dangerous one and our guy’s simply didn’t care. In order to bring some life into the team Terim would sub in Bruma at the 61’st min for Engin. He created a few positions with the ball but really had no backup. Ronaldo would score 2 back to back goals in a matter of 3 minutes bringing the score to 4-0. Burak had another opportunity at goal but headed the ball just past the goal post, wide open, but he didn’t care. He stopped running, didn’t even try to create any positions. Terim would notice and later sub in Umut for Burak. Too little too late as Benzema would score his 2nd to bring the score to 5-0 just minutes later. As Umut pressed forward Amrabat’s cross from the right wing would land right at his feet allowing him to put a goal on the board for GS 5-1. Then just when you thought the pain was over Ronaldo slices through making a fool of our defense to get his hat-trick 6-1. Ughh.
I hate being so negative so let’s just try to look at the bright side of things.
- While we lost our first game and ultimately on 3 pts, Juventus and Copenhagen ended in a 1-1 tie leaving the group;
Real Madrid – 3
Juventus – 1
Copenhagen – 1
Galatasaray – 0
- It’s only the first game and we aren’t far behind. Our goal difference may be -5 but we’re only 1 pt behind Juventus with 5 games still remaining. I hope this result is the huge slap in the face our players need to wake up from this rut. We cant afford to concede this many goals, going on in the competition and Burak needs to get his act together. FFS you scored 25+ goals 2 seasons in a row what is going on with you?! Selcuk get your man!
-Our U19 squad also faced Real Madrids U19 in UEFA’s new Youth Champions League, and played exceptionally well. I honestly didn’t expect them to pressure Madrid as much they did. Galatasaray scored the opening goal 15′ minutes in but Real Madrid would equalize just 1 minute later. The game would end in a 1-1 draw but left many GS fans proud of our youth.
-While our A team let us down, ultrAslan made us proud with this kick ass tifo show.
