How Hasan Sas could have made it to Arsenal
By: Musab | March 2nd, 2009It’s the summer of 2002. The Turkish national team has won third place in the 2002 World Cup in East Asia. Back home, Galatasaray is celebrating its 15th league title and its Third Star. In both of these accomplishments, a 25 year old Hasan Sas was key. Back then Hasan Sas showed great skill with the ball, getting past his opponents with ease, drifting into the penalty box to either shoot or provde the assist. In that summer, it was very apparent that Hasan Sas would not be staying with us. However to everyone’s disappointment, Hasan stayed with Galatasaray and is still with the club, despite not playing as often as he used to.
Today an ex-Galatasaray board member, Abdurrahman Albayrak revealed details into how Arsenal were so close to sign the 25 year old star. According to Albayrak, Arsenal sent a delegation to bring Hasan back to London as Arsene Wenger had been looking into him for quite some time. Arsenal apparently made a starting bid of 7.5 million Dollars and seemed very interested into buying Hasan. Galatasaray decided to play hard ball and asked for 12 million dollars. Bear in mind that Galatasray had recently lost 26 million dollars over Jardel’s departure from the club.
After some heated negotiation, Galatasaray lowered their price to 10 million dollars and asked for Arsenal’s final take-it-or-drop-it bid. In a show of good faith Galatasaray refused to meet with the delegations of Lazio and A.C Milan who were also very interested in the winger. It is rumored that Lazio had a 17 million dollar bid ready for both Hasan Sas and Bulent Korkmaz. Arsenal’s final bid was at 9 million dollars. Albayrak stated that they insisted on 10 million dolars and so the transfer died then and there.
Hasan Sas stayed on with the club and would go on to win more titles, but he would always seem broken by his failure to make it to Europe. Hasan became more agressive and violent, seeing many red cards for cursing at referees and attacking opponents and even team mates on occasion. Hasan went from being the Golden Boy of Turkish football to the black sheep.

such a shame to see a fantastic player like hasan become the player he is today. we all know he love the CimBom but when his it comes to his attitude and temper, they just aren’t good what so ever.

Brett: I believe Galatasaray ships its merchandise to America as well, including jerseys. It’ll cost a bit more, but since the jersey is already cheaper than most of its European counterparts at 47 dollars, it evens out well.

Musab, I apologize for inciting that argument on the WCB. If you’d like to have a civil discussion with me about it feel free to shoot me an e-mail at mike1337mike[at]gmail.com
I’d really like to hear your opinions on that subject, seeing as I’ve never really heard it from the Turkish perspective, and I like to think I’m not so narrow minded as to go through life with only half a story.Posted from
