“It’s not easy to wear Galatasaray’s uniform. This goes for those who are given the chance to play, as well as those that sit aside for that match. We have such a team that we’re favorites for every match we play. The path ahead is not going to be easy, but if we’re concentrated on the task at hand, we’ll be leaders in only three weeks. That’s all the time we need”

Arda is absolutely correct here. At this point, every lost point will be cause for disappointment as this team should be able to easily defeat any Turkish team. With only two points lost at home so far, we need to keep this impressive record at the Ali Sami Yen. What better way to say farewell to the hell that we’ve loved for so long.

Can there be anything better than this? I hope and pray that I will always wear the Galatasaray jersey for the rest of my life, just like Bulent Korkmaz. But of course if Europe comes calling I will listen to their offers. There will be a right time for everything”.

After the greedy rat went off for Aziz Baba’s money, there were rumors that Arda was the next target. But of course Arda out these rumors to death as soon as he heard them, claiming “May God never show me anything like that”. If Arda keeps playing the wonderful football he’s putting out week in and week out, he’ll get far. But he’ll always be a lion at heart. Well done Arda. You know that we love you very much.

This year Istanbul will be hosting the 2009 UEFA Cup final in the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, home of Fenerbahce. The Galatasaray board have already stated that Kadikoy (where the stadium’s located), is the objective of this season. UEFA welcomed Bulent and Roberto Carlos at the presentation ceremony of this year’s final, where Bulent gave a short interview.

UEFA: Is this competition extra special for you as a UEFA Cup winner?

Bülent Korkmaz: We brought the UEFA Cup – a trophy every player in Europe dreams of – to Turkey, and to be part of that success as captain made me extremely happy and proud. Not many players get to lift that trophy, no matter how good they are. So it is a big legacy we managed to leave.

UEFA: What are your memories of the 2000 final against Arsenal?

Korkmaz: I was very nervous before the game, but once I walked on to the pitch that stopped. I had played a lot of big games at Galatasaray’s ground, the Ali Sami Yen, but to experience that marvellous atmosphere in Copenhagen, at the Parken Stadium, was a completely different feeling. Our fans were chanting patriotic songs and I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck. They were unforgettable moments – it made you proud to be Turkish. And we were all so emotional when we won the trophy because we had wanted it so much, maybe more than Arsenal did.

UEFA: What will it mean for Istanbul to stage a second major final in the space of four years, following the UEFA Champions League final of 2005?

Korkmaz: That Champions League final was played in the European part of the city, now the UEFA Cup final will be in the Asian side. We are trying to promote both parts of Istanbul, and I have no doubt it will be a great occasion.

UEFA: What is the likelihood of another Turkish team lifting the UEFA Cup, with Galatasaray doing well in the group stage and Fenerbahçe possibly entering the competition via the Champions League?

Korkmaz: I would love to see two Turkish sides in the final, but realistically speaking, I want to see two teams who really deserve to be there contesting the final.

For our non-Turkish readers, both Turkish and Azerbaijani Turkish are very similar, with some words replacing others and just a matter of speach being the real difference. That being said, it’s never easy to translate the two into each other. In Turkish we would say “Ucak iniyor”, meaning “the plane is descending”, while the Azeri’s would say “Ucak dusuyor”, which translates into Turkish as “the plane is falling (from the sky)”

- «Qalatasaray»da gənclər komandasında sənin məşqçilərin olmuş Halim Fıçıcı ilə Ali Yavaşın Azərbaycanın “Qəbələ” klubunda çalışdığından xəbərin varmı?

- Əlbəttə. Hər iki məşqçinin orada olmasının Azərbaycan futbolu üçün inanılmaz dərəcədə xeyiri dəyəcək. Onlar türk futboluna böyük futbolçular bəxş edən insanlardı. Böyük hədəfləri var. İnanıram ki, bu hədəflərinə Azərbaycanda çatacaqlar. Onlar sistemlə işləyən məşqçilərdi. Öz sistemlərini orda tətbiq etsələr, bu, Azərbaycan üçün çox böyük bir şans olar. İnanıram ki, nə vaxtsa Azərbaycan futbolu da Türkiyə futbolunun səviyyəsinə çatacaq və biz futbolda da bərabər addımlayacağıq.

- Azərbaycana gəlməyi düşünürsənmi?

- Bu vaxta qədər sizin ölkənizdə heç olmadım. Azərbaycanın türkdilli dövlət olduğunu bilirəm. Ona görə də ora gəlməyi düşünürəm. İnşallah, tətildə Halim hocanın yanına gəlməyi planlaşdırıram.

- Azərbaycanda dostların var?

- Bəli, tələbə dostlarım var. Onlarla tez-tez əlaqə saxlayıram.

- Bəs futbolçulardan?

- Azərbaycanda çıxış edən türk futbolçularla da əlaqəm var: Suat Usta və Ali Cansunla. Onlar çox yaxşı futbolçulardı. Bildiyimə görə, orada uğurlu çıxış edirlər.

- Ümumiyyətlə, Azərbaycan futbolu ilə maraqlanırsanmı?

- Tanıdığım yeganə klub “Qəbələ”di. Çünki Halim hoca ilə Ali Yavaş hoca orada işləyirlər. Bir də sizin milli komandanın son yoldaşlıq görüşünü izləmişəm. Bərabərə qaldınız albanlarla.

- Komanda yoldaşın Sərvət Çətini Azərbaycanlı olduğunu bilirdinmi?

- Əlbəttə bilirik. İğdırlıdı, kökü azərbaycanlıdı.

- Son zamanlar “Qalatasaray”dan ayrılacağınla bağlı xəbərlər dolaşır…

- Mənim “Qalatasaray”la 2012-ci ilə qədər müqaviləm var. Bu səbəbdən qərarı rəhbərlik verəcək. Mən burada qalıb oynamağa hazıram.

- Ötən mövsüm bir çox çətinliklərə baxmayaraq, çempion oldunuz. Bu mövsüm necə, eyni uğura imza atacağınıza inanırsanmı?

- Düzdü, ötən mövsüm çox çətin anlar yaşadıq. Bəzi aparıcı futbolçularımız zədələndi, bəziləri cəzalanaraq çətin oyunları buraxmalı oldu. Amma hamıya məlumdur ki, bizim komandada heç kimdə olmayan ruh və birlik var. Və bu ruh bizə bütün çətinliklərə rəğmən, çempion olmağımıza kömək etdi. Bu il də Allahın köməyi ilə çempion olacağıq.
