The Great Captain returns, and where do we go from here?
By: Musab | February 23rd, 2009Last Sunday was a great day of agony for the CimBom. It was a day of endings. On the smallest of scales, it ended our record of being undefeated in the Ali Sami Yen. On the grandest, it ended Michael Skibbe’s career with Galatasaray. Skibbe was a good man, perhaps too good for managing this club. He was never able to really adapt to the Turkish style of play and he was criticized from the very beginning after being unable to qualify for the Champions League group stages. In 2009, Skibbe’s Galatasaray lost 11 out of 15 possible points in the league, was eliminated from the Turkish Cup, and only managed a 0-0 draw at Bordeaux (a 1-1 scoreline on Thrusday will see Bordeaux go through). The Galatasaray board decided enough was enough and made the right decision to sack Skibbe.
A couple of phone calls later, Galatasaray managed to resign CimBom legend Bulent Korkmaz. Bulent’s played a little over a 1000 matches with the CimBom and his No.3 jerseys has (apparently not) been retired. For Bulent to return like this makes us very excited and very hopeful. We would love to see Bulent lift more trophies with us, this time as our manager.
As we stand right now, we are in 6th place in the league, and 8 points adrift from Sivasspor. Right now we are not eligible to play in Europe next year, something I don’t want to even think of. This Thursday we have a do or die match against Bordeaux, another team not in the best of form. At the very start of the season I stated that our ONLY goal this season is to win the UEFA Cup in Fener’s stadium. It’s looking more and more that that will be our only real chance to win silverware.
Despite these dark clouds, I trust my team, and I trust Bulent. I know this team has what it takes to overcome any obstacle in its way. I know that if our players just get that spark, get that CimBom spirit in their hearts, that there is no team on this Earth that can stop us. I know that this season will end in glory for us.

I think Bulent should ignore the Uefa cup and focus the team on the leauge, I rather finish 1:st in the league than finish 1:st again in uefa….

I’m not happy with the appointment, it has not been thought through properly.
Bulent was a great player for us, but he has no track record as a manager, the biggest team he has managed is Bursa which he got fired from.We offered the guy a 2.5 year contract, this is not good management, why not wait until the end of the season to see how he does (a la Real Madrid). What happens if he fails? the board will fire him then and we will then be forced to find another coach. Great
I hope that I’m wrong! But i think Bulent needs another 3 to 4 years experience before he is capable to do such a big job.
to Richard: Fener are ahead on goal difference

i also have doubts of the decision made.
mAAN: we have a much more realistic chance of winning the UEFA cup(crazy as that sounds) than winning the Super Lig.
Musab : Bulent’s jersey was never retired, they were thinking about it and Bulent said that he didn’t want it retired, Ugur Ucar wears #3 now.
