Galatasaray goes Oranje
By: Musab | June 6th, 2009After all the whining and name calling over who will be our next manager, the 46 year old Dutchman Frank Rijkaard put ink to paper on a 2 year deal yesterday to great fanfare by the media and fans. Frank Rijkaard is a man who needs no introduction with a very distinguished footballing career. After coming through the Ajax youth system, he eventually made the move to Italian giants A.C Milan where he was part of the magic Dutch trio along with Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten.
As a manager he coached the Dutch National Team before moving onto Sparta Rotterdam and then to the Catalan giants Barcelona. At Barcelona he formed the club’s playing style to how he saw fit, even though it took some time for his tactics to take hold. He insisted on a 4-3-3 style formation with the two wingers also coming into the penalty box to join in the attack. By playing a methodical passing game, Barcelona was able to both play attractive football which brought the fans to the stadium, and defeat their opponents through sheer quality.
Rijkaard is the one who brought Ronaldinho to the club and fashion him into the superstar he was during his heyday. He’s the one that pulled Messi into the first team and give him the chance to develop at a young age. He brought in top class players such as Samuel Eto’o, Deco, and Rafa Marquez. He was able to get the best out of the youth system product players such as Carles Puyol, Xavi, and Iniesta. After forming the team he wanted, he went on to win two La Liga titles, two Spanish Cups, and the 05/06 Champions League title. Without a doubt, Frank Rijkaard has all the credentials.
So how will this affect our club? I would argue that it isn’t going to be too hard for Rijkaard to bring the same kind of change he brought to Barcelona to our club. He will most likely build the team around our own superstar Arda Turan, just as he built Barca around Ronaldinho. I expect him to use Milan Baros as our lone striker and for Arda and Kewell to come into help them. That would effectively be our “forward 3″.
The next part of the equation is the “middle 3″. So far the only player that I can confidently say will have a place in this three is Mehmet Topal. Will Ayhan be able to match this year’s performance? Rijkaard will probably make that decision during this summers training camp. Another question mark is whether or not Lincoln will have a place in this team. Quite frankly, he doesn’t deserve it all. If it was up to me he would be sent off as soon as possible. However theres every chance that Lincoln might feel the great need to impress his new manager. Another decision Rijkaard will have to make this summer. Other possibilities for the “middle three” include Tobias Linderoth (if he ever returns from the hospital), Baris Ozbek, Aydin Yilmaz, Mustafa Sarp, or of course we could always go shopping for a new player.
The final piece in the jigsaw is the “back four”. We can say with confidence that Hakan Balta will start as left back and Servet will play as central defender. However I believe that we will need to go shopping for a new central defender, preferebly an expensive (I’m talking around 10 million Euros), superstar central defender. I’ll leave the name of that signing to Rijkaard himself. Ugur Ucar would be my choice to start Right back, along with his number 3 jersey, but Serkan Kurtulus might be able to surprise us this season. One thing is certain, Sabri has no place in this squad and he needs to understand that. If he’s content with sitting on the bench and keeping his mouth shut, he’s welcome to stay. If not, he can piss off.
I guess if we can get a good goalkeeper on the cheap, we should get him. Leo Franco’s a name that get thrown around a lot. He would be ideal, but I doubt he will actually come. Otherwise I guess it’s back to Aykut and Orkun again.
As I’ve laid out, Rijkaard will only need to make one signing, a central defender, but he probably will want to make a couple of his own signings so that he can put an imprint on the squad. I’m very optimistic for the future of this club. Rijkaard is the kind of big name this team needs to reach its full potential.

rijkard to galatasaray is one interesting adventure. can he overcome the linguistic barrier? aragones couldn’t… anyway, i hope he’ll bring you guys back to the european football map again(and by that i mean champions league). it’s more fun when there are more teams from the east.

I’m not sure if I agree with your opinions on Lincoln, but I definitely agree that we’re going to need to go hunting for a defensive anchor somewhere in Europe. It’d also be great if the new status the club has can attract some displeased talent from elsewhere. It’d be brilliant to bring another Aussie, Lucas Neill, from West Ham. However, our first priority has to be picking up a wall of a goalie. Leo Franco would be a good signing, but I agree with you insofar as I don’t think he’ll make it over. Maybe someone like Logan Bailly or someone like that.

I dont really agree on what you say about sabri. I think he is a great player, that shows his hunger and determination to play in the first team. Him and Ucar are both good right backs, and I feel Rijkaard will have a tough decision to choose who to play. Other than that i agree with everything you say, I feel Lincoln should go, so too Linderoth and Karan, Bring in a sriker to compete with Baros, like u said we need a good Center Back, a goal keeper, and maybe a midfeild player even though we dont need it that much as we do a defender and a goalkeeper.

Jake: Logan Bailly would be a great signing, and we jsut migh tget him on the cheap as Gladbach could use the cash to bolster their squad to avoid another relegation battle neext year. I could realistically see him coming our way.
Yusuf: I respect your views, but I am convinced that Sabri doesn’t have a place in this team. The Sabri of 2009 is the same Sabri of 2004. I haven’t seen any improvement from him since he first started playing for us. He runs, but thats all he does. I have yet to see him provide a decent cross into the penalty box, something Okan and Hasan Sas did so comfortably.
I agree however that we might need a forward to compete with Baros, and that Linderoth probably should be let go. But our top priority now is a Central Defender and a Goalkeeper.

yeah i entirely agree about sabri. other than his running he’s awful. i also i agree that we’re gonna need another strong player in each position. baros needs another quality striker alongside him, and one more solid midfielder would be good. let’s hope rijkaard can bring in some big names that will give cim bom success in europe again

“success in Europe again” ahh but isn’t that what we all want…

The squad needs some new faces, Karan, Hasan, Nonda and maybe a couple of others need to fine a new Club.
Totally agree with the defense comments but I feel that apart from Baros we are very light upfront with little to turn too if thinga are not going our way Yaser is not an option for a top team.
On the Sabri question i think that a coach like Rijkaard will get the best out of him and that he will be able teach some of the younger players the one thing missing in their game, DISCIPLINE if he can do this then watch out Europe.
NOTE: Aragones failure was not the language situation, he was totally clueless about Turkish football.Posted from

I am very happy that Rijkaard has been chose to take Galatasaray foward. I was also very suprised that we were able to get him on board.
I am very optimistic about the season coming up, which personally I think will be the most exciting and competitive Super Lig season yet.
I feel that we have a good solid squad with a good mix of youth, talent, quality and experience.
I think Rijkaard should get rid of Nonda, Umit, Hasan, Emre Asik and Linderoth.
We obviously need a new goalkeeper, also two defenders. A center back and a defender who can play center and right back. As Cervet and Gungor will be the only recognized centre backs (if Asik goes).
We have a good center midfield as we have Ayhan, Topal, Ozbek and Lincoln who I feel should be given a fresh start under Rijkaard as in my opinion he is he second best player in the Super Lig behind Arda. We will need a new striker (if Nonda and Umit leave). I would like to see a target man, someone who can supply and help Baros. My team next season (realistic line-up)
Leo Franco
Orhan Sam Neill Servet Balta
Topal Lincoln Ozbek
Arda Baros Kewell
OR:
Leo Franco
Orhan Sam Neill Servet Balta
Arda Lincoln Topal Kewell
Baros Gudjohnson
What you guys think??

Heard that Rijkaard wants Oleguer (of Ajax – but in Spain at the moment) in GS. He played as defender for Barcelona when Rijkaard was coach.

CimBom91: I think the first line up is a pretty respectable line-up but I wonder if Servet will stay around.
Hans: I for one would love to see Oleguer on this team. He has played in over 100 competitive match for Barca so he knows what its like to play for a big club.

Other names are: Seedorff (ex Ajax now AC Milan), Babel (ex Ajax now Liverpool) Hettinga (ex Ajax now Athletico Madrid) and Huntelaar (ex Ajax now Real Madrid) all, except for Seedorf are young players and all except Seedorf are part of the Dutch National Team.
Hettinga will be good as defender, Babel as forward, so Hntelaar and Seedorf as midfielder.
Enjoy Germany
