Breaking News: Galatasaray is set to be one of the wealthiest clubs in Europe!!!

By: Musab | December 13th, 2007

My friends today is a historical day. Our children will look back at this day and say: “yes, this was the day everything turned around”. Today, December the 13th in the year 2007 is a very special say indeed. For today, Galatasaray president Ozhan Canaydin, Turkish President Abdullah Gul, and many other dignitaries across Turkey came together to break ground for the construction of the Aslantepe Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi. What is the Aslantepe Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi you ask? Why let me explain.

In 1997, the Galatasaray board was delighted. The team was crushing all opposition, had already witnessed two championships and two Turkish cups and the future looked bright(the team would go on to win another three championships, a UEFA cup, and a Super Cup). However there was one problem. The homeground of Galatasaray the Ali Sami Yen stadium was too small and pretty old. It could only hold a maximum of 23000 fans. So the board promised a new, 45000 capacity stadium in a couple of years. Well a couple of years passed by and nothing changed. Fenerbahce went on to build their own UEFA 5-star 50000 capacity Sukru Saracoglu stadium, while Galatasaray stayed in the unforgetable but small Ali Sami Yen.

Then finally, breakthrough. Current club president Ozhan Canyadin, commisioned the construction for a brand new 57000 capacity 6 star stadium along with top class training facilities and the expansion of Galatasaray’s legendary youth academy. Today my friends, construction has begun!!! In only two years this complex will be completed. But that’s not the best part.

When the complex is finished, Galatasaray will sell their old training grounds, and the land where our stadium is now. This is prime real estate since it is right in the middle of the Mecidiyekoy financial district and is only minutes away from Taksim square. Already a corporation from the United Arab Emirates (Forgot the name. I think it was The first gulf bank but im not sure) has sent a 300 million euro bid for the land. Galatasaray has decided to hold out for any other better offers. Correct me if i’m wrong, but didn’t Real Madrid do something like this, get a boatload of money and buy Figo, Makelele, and Zidane???

So let’s all hope that Galatasaray is gonna return to the glory days, and take it’s rightful place as the Sultans of Europe!!!!!

Here are some pictures of the whole deal:

Yes Real Madrid sold some land to the city of Madrid for a hefty chunk of change, but it was not what funded the purchase of the Galactico’s, rather its what the club have to fall back one still, although one would assume that they have dipped in the coffers every now and then to buy an overpriced player (Robben, Pepe and Diarra are all quality players but cost way to much).

Ehh.. if we can get 300 million, maybe we’ll also waste it on good, overpriced players…

I guess part of the 300 million euros will be used to finance the new stadium, but what will be left should indeed make Galatasaray filthy rich. Will be interesting to see this club’s next moves on the transfer market.

Oh maybe i didn’t indicate this, but the entire project is being funded by the Turkish government. I believe Galatasaray has to and has paid other fees for the project.

After the project is completed, Galatasaray will get 300 million DIRECTLY into their pockets. I can’t wait until 2010.

    Mike:

Well slowly but slowly the debt is being payed off, the players are recieving their salaries on time and there is more and more money being set aside for transfers.

The new stadium will be payed in large part by the Turkish government and by domestic and foreign sponsers. However Galatasaray must pay many other fees along with the Stadium.

In Turkey, almost all stadiums, except Fenerbahces Sukru Saracoglu, are owned by the government and are in turn leased out to the clubs for 99 years at a time. The clubs then must care for the stadium “properly”.

Galatasaray has other land besides the area around the Ali Sami Yen. For example they have their own private island smack in the middle of the Bosphorous. They will sell it for a large sum of cash, an Arab firm has made a 300 million Euro bid which was rejected by Galatasaray since the lands value is rapidly rising.
